Take Better Scenic & Holiday Photos

Avoid distracting objects

This tutorial started by asking “What is the photo of?”. You could also ask “What is the photo not of?”.

no distractions
The bridge and lampost just distract from the subject, which is meant to be the White Church. The photo looks better without them. click/tap picture

Check what is in the foreground and background. When you are there in person, you tend to ignore these extra objects. For example, the ice cream truck in front of the castle or the tour guide holding an umbrella. A few extra items may help the photo by putting the subject in context. But often they are a distraction and will ruin a good photo.

watch foreground
Check the foreground doesn't contain rubbish.

It may be possible to wait until the distraction has moved on. If not, you can often get rid of unwanted objects by moving a few metres to the left or right.

hide distractions
You can sometimes hide unwanted objects behind something else.

Another useful trick to improve the view, is to take the photo from behind something like a flower bed or fountain to hide unsightly objects.
